A Liberal Member of Parliament is opening up about his love for donuts.

Mississauga Centre MP Omar Alghabra tweeted a video last week explaining his appreciation for the sweet treat.

“Many of you know I love donuts, but there’s more to the story! I thought it’s time that I shared with you why. Find out how this tasty treat has shaped my life,” he tweeted.

In the video, the former minister of transport describes how when he first came to Canada from Saudi Arabia he only knew one person, his cousin. A few months after arriving in the country, Alghabra shared how he attended Toronto Metropolitan University to study mechanical engineering.

“It is here where I learned so much about Canada, about Canadians and what a great country we all have,” he said.

He then went on to discuss where his love for donuts started. Alghabra said he was hired to work the midnight shift at Donut Cafe, formerly located at Steeles Avenue and Ashcott Street. He said he was able to meet a variety of Canadians while working at the beloved shop.

“I got to hear the stories about their families. I also helped in making the donuts. That moment in my life helped shape who I am today and I’m grateful for every minute of it,” he said.

Alghabra has taken pride in trying different donuts while travelling around the nation for work and acknowledged his love for donuts with his journey in Canada.

“Every time I take a bite out of one of these donuts, it triggers back all of those memories. Memories of happiness, memories of success, memories of setbacks and this journey is what taught me the value of hard work. This journey is what taught me what it means to be a Canadian,” he said.
Alghabra first got into politics in 2006 when he was elected the MP for Mississauga Centre. He became the transport minister in Jan. 2021, but lost that profile last month after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau did a cabinet shuffle and appointed Pablo Rodriguez to the role.
