THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE (Clay Kaytis, Fergal Reilly). 97 minutes. Opens Friday (May 20). See listing. Rating: NN
As the pent-up balls of feathers and fury go flying, they deliver the simple, destructive pleasures wed expect from the brand extension of the popular video game app, but only at the end.
The movie has a much bigger screen to fill than the one on your cellphone, and it has to go through familiar, harmless and -occasionally amusing plot motions to explain why these birds are so angry, and why theyre perfectly justified in going bin Laden on buildings.
Jason Sudeikis voices would-be ringleader Red, rationalizing his temper issues in ways that make you yearn for Adam Sandlers punch-drunk delirium. A boatload of green radioactive-looking pigs has crashed onto the birds shore, leaving Red annoyed and suspicious of the migrants in ways that Donald Trump would applaud.
I cant muster up the righteousness to be offended by any of it this movie is just too inconsequential.
