Polls have officially opened for three federal by-elections with significant attention focused on Mark Carney and the Liberal Party, which sits just one seat short of a majority government.
The by-elections are being held in Scarborough Southwest, University-Rosedale, and Terrebonne.
Polling stations in Scarborough Southwest and University-Rosedale opened at 8:30 a.m. and will close at 8:30 p.m on Monday.
Eligible voters must bring identification. This can include a single piece of government-issued ID, such as a driver’s licence, with their photo, name, and current address.
Alternatively, voters may present two pieces of ID, such as a health card paired with a bank statement or a utility bill alongside a student ID.
Voters in Scarborough Southwest can choose from the following candidates:
- Doly Begum (Liberal Party of Canada)
- Diana Filipova (Conservative Party of Canada)
- April Francisco (Independent)
- Peter Koubakis (People’s Party of Canada)
- Pooja Malhotra (Green Party of Canada)
- Lyall Sanders (Centrist Party of Canada)
- Fatima Shaban (New Democratic Party)
- David Vedova (Christian Heritage Party of Canada)
Meanwhile, voters in University-Rosedale have the following options:
- Samuel Baxter (Canadian Future Party)
- Leslie Bory (No Affiliation)
- Andy D’Andrea (People’s Party of Canada)
- Raiden DeDominicis (Independent)
- Donald Watson Hodgson (Conservative Party of Canada)
- Imran Khan (Centrist Party of Canada)
- Danielle Martin (Liberal Party of Canada)
- Andrew Massey (Green Party of Canada)
- Serena Purdy (New Democratic Party)
- William Whatcott (Independent)
These by-elections come just days after former Conservative MP Marilyn Gladu crossed the floor to join the Liberal Party.
Gladu is the fifth MP to do so in recent months. Most recently, Lori Idlout left the NDP caucus in March to sit with the Liberals.
Following these changes, the Liberals now hold 171 seats, just one shy of the 172 needed to form a majority government.
