BLACK KEYS

BLACK KEYS Thickfreakness (Anti/Epitaph) Rating: NNN

Rating: NNN

Who could’ve predicted that Deja Voodoo’s drum ‘n’ guitar battery would be so ahead of its time it would take almost 20 years before the White Stripes, the Kills and the Black Keys would catch on? Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney add a bit more soulfulness and bottom-end bump to the mix on Thickfreakness, which brings them closer than ever to Tony Joe White’s swamp turf. In fact, White’s been putting on some devastating shows lately with just a drummer, a guitar and his trusty whomper-stomper pedal that out-wallops anything these Black Keys kooks can muster. Maybe the Epitaph braintrust signed the wrong act.
