The Dinner is Ruined

Rating: NNNN

You know how the most exciting part of a Broken Social Scene show is that moment when everything seems like it’s going to fall apart and then a song suddenly emerges? That’s what happens on just about every track the Dinner Is Ruined recorded for Legion Hall. Over the years of messing around, chef Dale Morningstar has learned the secrets of cooking with chaos, and the new album – downloadable from www.zunior.com – is a 15-course prix fixe delight. Although Morningstar’s pursuit of a more linear narrative approach and the songs’ tunefulness make this the band’s most accessible work yet, a rickety keyboard intermittently buzzes like angry bees under a blanket and there’s still a single-take haphazardness, which is what makes the Dinner Is Ruined who they are.

The Dinner Is Ruined celebrate the launch of Legion Hall at the Tranzac Saturday (February 26).
