Fun Day At Foundry

NOSAJ THING, TIM SWEENEY, JOHN ROBERTS, MEMBERS ONLY, HDIMYF, MYMANHENRI and more, as part of Foundry BBQ at MOCCA and 99 Sudbury, Saturday, August 17. Rating: NNNN

Back in March, Toronto event promoters Mansion gathered a wide range of other local dance-music curators for Foundry, a scene-bridging month-long series of shows. They revived the concept Saturday for an all-day BBQ in the MOCCA courtyard and a late-night after-party around the corner at 99 Sudbury. Like that March series, it spanned a wide range of underground electronic music, but managed to squash it all into one day, rather than spreading it out over a series of dates.

The daytime portion was all about romantic disco vibes and soulful house in the sunshine, with NYC’s Tim Sweeney and Toronto’s Members Only making the biggest impressions. The nighttime warehouse party was the polar opposite, with the main room filled with dark and murky break-beat experiments from Nosaj Thing and Mymanhenri, while austere classical music-influenced techno from John Roberts plus scary acid tracks from HDIMYF – who also rocked the closing set in the courtyard earlier – played in the side room.

Turns out that Toronto’s party scene appreciates variety.
