Hard-working indie-spirited Emm Gryner’s 11th album, Goddess, is a collection of 10 deeply personal songs that weave a narrative of heartbreak. The imagery is wintry and bleak, while angry guitars and emotive strings replace much of her trademark piano tinkling. Apparently, Gryner left off a few poppier tunes because, as she’s said, “they had no place intruding on the moody, sub-zero landscape of this album.”

It’s disheartened stuff, yes, but not a total drag. The Sarnia native’s soaring melodies are everywhere, and dynamic songs like Die Evergreen and Young As The Night overflow with astounding craftsmanship. Throw in Gryner’s gorgeous voice, Canadiana references and the countryish Leftover Love and it’s easy to feel the warmth beneath the cold.
