GINGY with JORDAN DARE, MANSION, GOLDEN GLOVES at Circa (126 John), Friday (February 20). $15. circatoronto.com.
When putting together our Future Sound Of Toronto cover story a few weeks ago, we asked the featured artists who they would’ve liked to see on the list. Local electro-house producer DJ Gingy received the most votes, which won’t surprise anyone who’s seen how his bangin’ chainsaw-synth club thumpers ignite a dance floor.

Gingy (aka Brian Wong) played in bands before getting turned on to electronic music. Shortly after, he hooked up with the More Proof crew and became a resident at their monthly Drake throwdown. Fawning reviews from indie dance blogs soon followed, as well as calls from well-loved UK dance institution Fabric, which offered him a publishing deal.
“It was actually back in 2007 that they approached me,” recalls Wong as he prepared for a recent More Proof gig. “They were scouting around and found me. I was surprised, because usually they go with higher-profile people. I was pretty happy about it.
“Publishing is cool. Now that the record industry has been screwed over by piracy, artists need to find other ways to make money. [Publishers] basically sell your songs to video games, films, commercials.”
Along with his More Proof residency, Gingy hosts a hyped-up weekly party, Dirty Disko, in London, Ontario, where he’s going to school.
“There really wasn’t anything going on in London in terms of parties, and I wanted to have somewhere to DJ while I was at school. It was a monthly last year, but that was before all this electro stuff blew up. Now we’ve moved it to a bigger bar and it’s a weekly. A lot of the students are really into it, and there’s suddenly a big scene around this sound.”
