While Green Day proved with American Idiot that the pop/punk formula can still be pushed into new terrain, many of their contemporaries are really struggling to find their feet. Taking a break from working with younger and better-looking bands like the Used and Good Charlotte, Goldfinger’s John Feldmann throws atmospheric guitars and mandolin into his band’s tame ska-pop-punk mix, pumping up the tunes to full-on pop mode with mixed results. While Disconnection Notice is sometimes OK, too many of Feldmann’s efforts come off as hackneyed, and the dude’s snotty teenage vocal delivery is getting tougher to swallow by the year.
Goldfinger rocks the Kool Haus tonight (Thursday, February 24).
