KITTIE

Rating: N

Calling your all-female heavy metal band Kittie has about as much lasting ironic effect as, say, calling your racist Oi! band Pizza Party and the Pyjama-Jammy-Jams. Even more unfortunate, though, is when your fourth album — and first release in seven years — also somehow sounds far less mature and planned than your first. All of which is to say that the Morgan Lander-fronted quartet has produced a record that falls so spectacularly short of expectations that the only thing left to ponder is who the fuck would want to listen to it? Structurally, the bulk of Funeral plays like cheap Stone Sour rip-offs (if that’s even possible) and showcases Lander’s ultra-annoying ability to sing almost exclusively through her nose as she spouts trite, clichéd lyrics about pain and suffering. Ironic, since the one who should really feel pain is the listener.

Kittie hit Fun Haus Friday (April 13).
