Local Spotlight: Surface to Sound

Rating: NNNNN

Who? Jay Manuel (guitar, voice, programming) and (not shown) Stephen Zsirai (bass), Kevin Brow (drums) and Mike Bracken (harp).

WHERE? Friday (April 20) at the NOW Lounge.

SOUND? During this two-part gig, Manuel and crew will morph from a lo-fi alternative soul group into a beat-driven house outfit playing along to experimental films.

key fast facts? From pop group to musical theatre project, electronica outfit, alt-rock combo and now power pop trio with a cinematic edge, Surface to Sound is whatever Manuel’s fancy is at a given time. Five albums released since 96, and no two alike. Manuel, not surprisingly, works by day in film and audio.

WHY? Sounds like a groovy way to spend an evening — Motown-meets-grunge, with visuals.

IF YOURE INTO: Everything and the kitchen sink or, as Manuel calls it, ambient, soulful house music with a 60s edge.
