A three-alarm fire destroyed six townhouse buildings and damaged various others in Yorkville on Wednesday morning.

The fire started on a construction site on Scollard St. at around 4:30 a.m. and quickly spread to other buildings and cars in the area, according to Toronto Fire.

Videos and images of the fire show huge plumes of smoke and the homes engulfed in flames.

No injuries have been reported. Firefighters are expected to remain at the scene for the rest of the day, still working on extinguishing hot spots. Bay St. is currently closed between Yorkville Ave. and Davenport Rd.

According to Toronto Fire Deputy Chief Steve Darling, who spoke with reporters at the scene this morning, the fire is now under control.

“There is going to be a significant dollar value loss here,” he said. “The six buildings that were involved were destroyed. There is exposures on either side, two or three, that will probably have to be gutted and renovated.”

The deputy chief also noted that many of the buildings were centuries-old, historic constructions that had been converted into businesses.

“The ones across the street received only damage to the facades, windows and siding and that sort of thing, those can be repaired.”

Toronto Fire didn’t speak on what could have started the fire and the Fire Marshal will be called to investigate.
