What to know
- TTC to shut down part of Line 1 this weekend for infrastructure upgrades and slow-zone removals.
- Subway service between St. George and Sheppard West stations will be replaced by shuttle buses from Sunday until early Monday.
- Partial service and single-track operation between Wilson and Lawrence stations could add up to 20 minutes to Monday commutes.
- Concertgoers and festival attendees are being urged to plan ahead as transit disruptions coincide with a busy weekend of events in Toronto.
Line 1 commuters on the TTC could face longer travel times as the transit agency prepares to shut down a portion of the line this weekend and operate partial service next week while completing infrastructure upgrades ahead of the FIFA World Cup.
On Tuesday, the TTC announced it is accelerating essential subway infrastructure work and plans to remove four remaining reduced-speed zones on Line 1 between Sheppard West and St. George stations over the coming week.
How long will the disruption last?
To complete the work, the TTC says it will suspend subway service between St. George and Sheppard West stations beginning at 12:30 a.m. on Sunday. The closure will remain in effect until 6 a.m. on Monday.
When service resumes Monday morning, it will operate only partially. Trains between Wilson and Lawrence stations will run on a single track until 6 a.m. on Tuesday, June 9.
The TTC says shuttle buses will operate throughout the closure to accommodate passengers.
Subway service on Line 1 between St. George and Sheppard West stations will also end early each night this week, with trains stopping at 11:59 p.m. through Thursday.
“We are doing this to strengthen the system ahead of FIFA, and more importantly for the long-term future of our network,” TTC CEO Mandeep Lali said Tuesday.
TTC officials say Monday commutes could take up to 20 minutes longer because of the partial service restrictions.
Concert and festival-goers urged to plan ahead
The shutdown comes as Toronto’s summer festival and concert season ramps up. The All Things Go festival, Dundas West Fest, and a Luke Combs concert at Rogers Stadium are all scheduled for this weekend.
The Luke Combs concerts, in particular, are expected to draw large crowds on Friday and Saturday. Rogers Stadium is located within walking distance of both Sheppard West and Downsview Park stations on Line 1.
The TTC says subway service will end at 12:30 a.m. following the Luke Combs concert on Friday, June 5.
Anyone travelling downtown for a concert, festival, or other event is encouraged to check transit schedules and plan ahead before leaving home.
