For the second time this off-season, the Walter Cup has gone missing.
The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) trophy was supposed to arrive in Brighton, Mich. over the weekend for an event hosted by former Montreal Victoire player Shiann Darkangelo but was not delivered in time.
This is the second time the Walter Cup has disappeared. Two weeks ago, the trophy was supposed to spend the day with Victoire player Dara Greig in Lethbridge, Alta. but failed to show up. The PHWL issued a statement, saying the trophy “did not arrive as expected at its latest stop.”
Although the league has not made any comments regarding the Walter Cup’s whereabouts this time around, Darkangelo posted about the mishap to her Instagram, writing in a post, “The Walter Cup did not arrive as expected yesterday, and unfortunately, it will not be at the Athleta event in Brighton today. I know many of you were excited to see the cup and I’m genuinely disappointed that it won’t be there.”
According to The Athletic, the PWHL used the same shipping company to send the Walter Cup to Michigan as it did to Lethbridge.
This incident has already sparked several memes from women’s sports accounts on social media. Canadian sports media company The Gist shared to its Instagram account a meme that reads, “If I had a nickel for every time the Walter Cup went missing…I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice.”
It’s worth noting that the missing Walter Cup is a sterling silver replica made by Tiffany & Co. called a “keeper” cup. The original trophy that teams fight to win each PWHL season is kept safely in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
