Canada Post will begin weekend deliveries in Toronto in November, with plans to expand to several other cities in the New Year.
In an effort to compete with private courier companies such as Amazon, UPS, and FedEx, the nation’s mail carrier says it aims to offer delivery on Saturdays and Sundays to more than seven million households in 2027.
Canada Post is already conducting weekend delivery services in Montreal and Ottawa, with expanded service — including service in Toronto — in November. In early 2027, the crown corporation will introduce the service to Vancouver, Calgary, and Edmonton.

Canada Post has faced continued scrutiny due to continued profit loss, which first occurred in 2018. In the eight years since, the federally owned crown corporation has lost a cumulative $5.4 billion, 2025 being the worst fiscal year on record. Last year, Canada Post reported a $1.57 billion loss.
In May, the federal government greenlit another $673 million in bailouts to the struggling mail carrier so it could “meet its operating and income,” adding to the $1 billion funding top-up from 2025 and the $1.03 billion cash injection from early 2025, which failed to keep Canada Post afloat.
Earlier this year, federal New Democratic Party (NDP) leader Avi Lewis questioned why Canada Post is continually vilified for being in debt when no one expects the nation’s ambulatory services or police services to turn a profit.
“We have shoved Canada Post so far into the market mindset that every few months, we have a national conversation about ‘Why isn’t Canada Post making money?’ Does the ambulance service make money? Do the police services make money?” Lewis commented on CTV Power Play.
