The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s (CBC) longtime sports journalist Scott Russell was visibly emotional during his final signoff on Sunday after nearly 40 years with the network.
Russell began his broadcasting career in 1985 with CBC Radio Charlottetown and was honoured with a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 for his significant contributions to Canadian sports.
In his last broadcast, wrapping up CBC’s coverage of the Paris Paralympics 2024, Russell reflected on the “beauty of sports” before announcing his departure as host of CBC Sports. He expressed deep gratitude to his colleagues, friends in Canadian sports, and his audience.
“I don’t know about you but I’ve had the time of my life. Thank you,” Russell concluded, struggling to hold back tears.
An award-winning broadcaster and acclaimed author, Russell is renowned for his hosting roles with CBC Sports and his extensive Olympic games coverage. He was appointed Chancellor of Nipissing University in July, a position he will hold for the next four years.
Since his final broadcast, tributes have been pouring in from Canadians and the journalism community.
“I cried with him. My entire life he’s always been a part of the Canadian sporting community. He’s going to missed,” one X user said.
“The final sign off for Scott Russell … it’s emotional and it’s beautiful. A broadcast legend who will truly be missed by the Olympic/amateur sports world,” journalist Rob Brodie said in an X post.
“Scott Russell is The G.O.A.T. of Canadian sports broadcasting and we have been so fortunate to be his audience🇨🇦,” one X user said.
“No one I know loves the Olympics more. No one will miss them more. And I know Canada will miss him too.🥇,” one of Russell’s friends said in an X post.
“You’re a legend @CBCScottRussell,” CBC sports reporter Devin Heroux said in an X post.
Many are speculating that Heroux will succeed Russell as CBC’s next sports anchor.
“I must say though, as we lose a legendary icon in Scott, Devin you’ve proven you’re our next legendary icon. Both of you are such amazing story tellers. So proud of both of you ❤️❤️❤️❤️,” one X user said.
“I will miss him. You are a legend in the making 😉,” added another X user.
However, at this time, CBC has not announced who will replace Russell.
