Loblaws is doing everything it can to prevent grocery theft and that now apparently includes checking for proof of payment in some stores.

One Twitter user is calling out the grocery store giant for a sign in a storefront advising customers to show their receipt when exiting the store due to “inventory accuracy.”

Ottawa resident @demonicrat_ took a jab at the company for being “greedy.”

“Loblaws knows we’re all out here stealing from them because they’re greedy,” they said.

“You can’t be cheap and think this sign fixes things,” another Twitter user said.

While Loblaws isn’t the first grocery store to check receipts, it certainly is out of the norm for the company that made its highest profits in history in the last two years.

In 2021, Loblaws made $1,976 million and in 2022, the company made $1,994 million, according to Statista.com.

Still, the company has reported more grocery theft since 2020 as food prices continue to rise.

Now Toronto reached out to Loblaws for a comment but has yet to receive a response.
