Green Party Leader Elizabeth May had some feisty words to share about the climate change crisis at a press conference on Tuesday.
With the crisis only getting worse from the effects of Hurricane Benyl all over the country, much of the conference was directed towards next steps.
The press conference was held in the wake of Green Party Deputy Leader Jonathan Pedneault announcing his resignation. May joined him at the presser and appeared to be heartbroken and is going viral for her frustration.
“Baby boomers have f*cked the planet,” she said at the conference.
Pedneault explained the Green Party has been fighting housing and environmental inequality for the last 40 years, while Liberal and Conservative governments ignore them.
May continued to rant, repeatedly saying “the planet is on fire.”
“Any single one of these events 20 years ago would have been unthinkable and we say ‘well, ax the tax,’” she said.
When a reporter asked if she’s ready to take full reign of the party, May said she’s grateful to be alive and working considering she had a stroke last year.
She continued to express her vigor until the end of the conference.
“I’m a 70-year-old angry, cranky version of Greta Thunburg. And am I ready? You bet.”
Online, Canadians have some strong opinions on May’s behaviour.
“Oh crap! I’m a boomer and I don’t know what I did wrong,” one person said on X.
“No wonder her party gets so little respect. She’s arguably correct, but it’s absurd to imply malice aforethought. She’s a boomer (me too), and a joke,” another X user said.
Meanwhile, some people are making jokes about May.
“She drunk again?” one person commented on X.
“She was in fact part of the Baby Boom Generation,” another person commented.
