Documentary exposing Brandy Melville’s ‘hellish’ practices doesn’t stop never-ending lines in Toronto

Crowd of diverse people waiting in line on a busy street in Toronto, Ontario, outside retail stores, showcasing vibrant urban shopping district, popular storefronts, and pedestrian activity in the city.
On TikTok, there’s an endless scroll of videos of petite girls cheerily showing off their new tank tops along with people touting how they’re willing to wait in the Queen West store’s notorious lineups (Courtesy: Roveena Chand Jassal).

Brandy Melville was recently exposed in the documentary Brandy Hellville last week, but that hasn’t decreased the snaking lineups in Toronto.

Brandy Melville claims its clothes follow a “one size fits most” approach.

The HBO Max documentary reveals the company’s alleged racist, fatphobic, and sexist practices, including experiences at the old Square One location in Mississauga.

Over 20 people lined up this past Saturday afternoon at the downtown location,, and it looks like Torontonians expect that when heading to the only store in Ontario.

One of the customers waiting in line told Now Toronto the wait is “well worth it” and they do it because it’s “Brandy Mellville, obviously.”

Apparently, the store sees up to 80 people in line at times and it’s one of the busiest clothing stores on Queen Street West, according to a supervisor at the store who wanted to remain anonymous.

“I do honestly think it’s mainly about the limited locations because this is the only one in Toronto and it’s a very busy city and [Brandy Mellville] doesn’t ship to Canada. That’s why we get so much attraction,” the supervisor told Now Toronto.

When asked about the allegations addressed in the documentary, the supervisor didn’t know how to answer, but mentioned they noticed the staff has always been diverse since they started working there during the pandemic.

“Things are very different now compared to how they used to be, and Brandy Mellville in Canada has always been different,” they said.
