A busy downtown intersection is closed Tuesday afternoon after a garbage truck struck down power lines in the area resulting in TTC service disruptions.

On Tuesday at around 8 a.m., a garbage truck struck down and damaged live TTC streetcar wires at King St. and Spadina Ave, according to a post on X from Toronto police.

No injuries were reported and the intersection was closed as a result, police said.

The downed power lines in turn damaged the streetcar overhead power network, resulting in a streetcar pileup along King St.

There are currently streetcar diversions in place along several routes, including the 501 Queen, 504 King, 508 Lake Shore, 510 Spadina, and 511 Bathurst. The TTC says buses are helping with service where possible.

The TTC says crews are cleaning up the area and working to assess and repair the power network.

“Once the site is cleared of all down wires and is deemed safe, TTC engineers will begin repairing salvageable wires, installing and configuring new wires, and ensuring breakers and other power systems are operational before testing the system for safe operations,” the TTC said in a statement on Tuesday.

The transit agency said the timeline for restoring service remains uncertain, and “the process is expected to be lengthy, and streetcar diversions are likely to persist throughout the day.”

Toronto police also told Now Toronto it has no estimate of when the work will be completed.
