Toronto’s first-ever women’s auto show led by industry experts is set to take place next month, providing educational resources for women looking to build on their automotive knowledge.

Led by Making Auto Easy, (MAE) a platform founded by Toronto native Vivian Liu to inform women about the auto industry, the event promises inclusive and informative opportunities for women to gain crucial car maintenance skills, and connect with like-minded enthusiasts.

The Women’s Auto Show will take place at the Toyota dealership in Yorkdale Shopping Centre on Nov. 1 from 6- 9:30 p.m.

Following the first-ever Women’s Auto Show in Vancouver, which garnered over 300-plus guests, numerous women-founded auto businesses from the GTA will be in attendance to lead workshops and demos, which will include insights into smart car shopping, tips on how to negotiate at dealerships, as well as delicious snacks, drinks, goodie bags, and prizes.

According to MAE, even though women purchase 62 per cent of all cars, 90 per cent of women wouldn’t visit a dealership without a man, and 2/3 feel unsure about where to start when buying a car.

“…Encouraging women to have automotive literacy challenges stereotypes and gender biases. It shows that women can excel in traditionally male-dominated fields and industries,” Lui told Now Toronto in a statement on Thursday.

“Women have all this purchasing power — they influence the majority of car purchasing. Yet many wouldn’t go to a dealership without a man,” Liu said. That’s why automotive literacy is vital, because it “empowers women to make informed decisions about their vehicles, from purchasing to maintenance, autonomy is essential in ensuring they are not taken advantage of in male-dominated spaces,” Lui explained.

Knowledge about car maintenance and repair also enhances personal safety. “Women can respond effectively to unexpected breakdowns, reducing vulnerability in potentially risky situations,” Lui also said.
