Grocery shopping just got a whole lot bigger. Ontario’s largest grocery store has officially opened its doors in Mississauga, bringing flavours, ingredients and cuisines from countries and regions around the world under one roof.
Food World Plus opened to shoppers on Oct. 30, welcoming residents from across the GTA to explore its massive 176,000-square-foot facility at 50 Matheson Blvd. East.
The grocery store has made global food its main selling point, highlighting products and ingredients from the Mediterranean, Latin America, Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and South Asia.
With such a wide range of international offerings, the store is looking to cater to Mississauga’s diverse population while giving shoppers access to ingredients they might otherwise have to visit multiple specialty grocery stores to find.
Beyond its international food selection, Food World Plus is also positioning itself as a one-stop shopping destination, with a range of departments including a flower section, bakery, deli, fresh meat department and in-house butcher.
Mayor-elect Alvin Tedjo was in attendance for the store’s grand opening alongside Ontario Premier Doug Ford. Tedjo later took to social media to welcome the new addition to the city.
“Food World Plus has everything you need and more! Congratulations to the entire Food World Plus team on this exciting milestone!” Tedjo said in an Instagram post.
One of the store’s standout offerings is its dedicated halal section within the meat department. According to Food World Plus, the meat is sourced from a certified halal supplier and handled according to halal standards, from delivery to the cuts prepared for customers.
“This is not a small corner of the counter. It is a core part of how the department is built,” the store said in a social media post.
The store is also putting plenty of space toward shoppers with a sweet tooth. Food World Plus features a 1,000-foot-long aisle dedicated to chocolate and other sweet treats, with everything from chocolate bars and truffles to gift boxes.
