From plumber to garbage collector, new study reveals highest-paying side hustles in Toronto

If you’re handy or love to work out you might be able to turn these skills into one of the highest-paying side hustles in Toronto, according to a new study. 

Online tutoring platform Preply conducted a study using Glassdoor and Indeed to create a list of the best-paid side hustles. The platform analyzed the average hourly wage of these side hustles on Indeed for every Canadian province and the 30 most populated cities.

The study found that 28 per cent of Canadians have started side hustles to earn extra money in order to keep up with Canada’s rising costs of living. 

“The average salary for side hustles across Canada sits at $24.90 and in a year (working 10 hours per week) this totals $12,948 which could have a huge financial impact on your life,” the study read.

According to its findings, the highest-paid side hustle in Toronto is plumbing with an earning potential of $37.70. In second place was a personal trainer whose average hourly wage was $30.90. Lastly, in third place was a mechanic with a wage of $30.60 an hour. 

“Our research has revealed that the average salary for side hustles across Toronto sits at $24.10 and in a year (working 10 hours per week) this totals $12,532 – meaning you’d be taking home nearly $13,000 extra a year,” the study said.

Here is the full list of the highest-paid side hustles in Toronto:

  1. Plumber – $37.70
  2. Personal Trainer – $30.90
  3. Mechanic – $30.60
  4. Freelance writer – $28
  5. Handy-man services – $25.22
  6. Freelance designer – $24.92
  7. Uber driver – $24.40
  8. Painter – $23.31
  9. Dog walker – $23.10
  10. Waste collection – $22.48

When it comes to the highest-paid side hustle in Canada, mechanics came out on top with an average wage of $35. Plumber also came in as a close second with $34.30. 

Province wide, British Columbia is the best place for highly-paid side hustles, with an average hourly wage of $26.70. Freelance designing was the highest earning gig averaging at $44.50 per hour. 

Meanwhile, the study found Quebec City is the ultimate Canadian city for side hustles offering an average hourly wage of $32.50.
