Sankofa Square is set to transform into a vibrant celebration of Ghanaian culture as Ghana takes on Panama in their second match at Toronto Stadium tonight.
The downtown gathering place will serve as the city’s official watch party location for Ghana supporters, but before kickoff, it will host the Ghana Fun Fest, a festival showcasing Ghana’s music, food, fashion, sports, and cultural heritage.
This year’s edition of the festival is World Cup-themed and will begin at 11:00 a.m., running through the late evening hours.
The watch party is scheduled to get underway at 3:30 p.m., while an afterparty will take place beginning at 11:00 p.m.
What to expect at Ghana Fan Fest
Festival organizers have also announced a number of special guests, including Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene and King of the Asante people.
Fans hoping to attend can still register by visiting the Ghana Fan Fest website.
Fan marches planned before kick-off
After enjoying the festivities, Ghana supporters will gather at Stanley Park at 3:00 p.m. before beginning their march to the stadium several hours ahead of kickoff.
Meanwhile, Panama supporters are expected to begin their own march to the stadium at 1:30 p.m., assembling at Trinity Bellwoods before making their way to the match.
Fans looking to watch the action elsewhere can also attend public viewing events, including the FIFA Fan Fest and Celebration Square in Mississauga.
Toronto Stadium first welcomed FIFA fans last week when Canada faced Bosnia and Herzegovina. Canada will play its next match against Qatar in Vancouver on Thursday.
Toronto’s World Cup atmosphere continues to grow
With the FIFA World Cup now underway, fan events are popping up across the city as supporters from around the globe gather to celebrate their teams.
Last week, Toronto hosted its first-ever men’s FIFA World Cup match when Canada faced Bosnia and Herzegovina, drawing thousands of fans to fan zones, watch parties and supporter marches throughout the downtown core.
Wednesday’s Ghana Fan Fest is expected to be one of the largest country-specific celebrations of the tournament so far.
The match marks Ghana’s first appearance in Toronto during the World Cup and is expected to draw large crowds both inside the stadium and at watch parties across the GTA.
Canada, meanwhile, returns to action Thursday when it faces Qatar in Vancouver.
