More changes are coming to GO Trains that will make commuting more seamless in some Greater Toronto areas.
In an X (formerly Twitter) post on Wednesday, Minister of Transportation Prabmeet Sarkaria provided details on the changes.
He shared that Lakeshore West and Lakeshore East would both be seeing 15-minute weekend service returning to both lines. This change would be implemented beginning on Saturday, May 2.
Additionally, the Kitchener line, which also runs through parts of Toronto’s west-end as well as Brampton, will be seeing two new express trains on weekdays. For express service, the first stop after Union Station will be the new Mount Dennis station before stopping in Bramlea.
This comes in part of Metrolinx’s plan to transform the Kitchener line into one with two-way, all-day rapid transit and begins on April 27.
Commuters can plan their trips on the Metrolinx website.
Online reaction
With both Lakeshore lines being some of the most busy of the transit map, as well as consistent online commentary about the Kitchener line needing more frequent service, many people online
were commenting on the up-coming changes.
One Reddit user expressed the bitter sweetness of the Kitchener line update.
“Great stuff,” they said. “[Not going to lie,] I was hoping to see a less-early weekend train to Union but I’m just happy we have options.”
Another Reddit user agreed, adding it will be nice for there to be early service one day.
“What I’d do for there to be a train at 9-10 on the weekend,” the Reddit user said. “The extra weekday will be great for catching Friday shows in Toronto though which is nice.”
Another Reddit user agreed, adding the ability to enjoy a night-out in Toronto is a welcomed one.
“I think it’s a great addition,” they said. “For a night out in Toronto the previous train got you there a little too early, Union at 4:30pm. Getting to Union at 5:15pm is much better aligned with getting a 5:30-6pm dinner reservation.”
Some Redditers also talked about the alignment with getting two-way transit to Kitchener.
“Wild. Getting closer to two-way all-day,” one Reddit user said.
“Very good start [in my opinion,]” a different Reddit user added.
