Canadians are having mixed reactions to Liberal leader Mark Carney’s declaration to cut taxes for the middle class in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs.
On Sunday, Carney posted a video on X with the caption, “I will immediately cut taxes for the middle class.”
“You have to focus on what you can control. We can’t control President Trump, but we can help you weather the storm,” Mark Carney said, while looking at the camera.
The 30-second clip features Carney shaking hands with different Canadian workers, a magazine headline comparing him to Lester B. Pearson, and a red “Canada Strong” Liberal party poster.
On Mar. 28, Carney and Trump apparently had a constructive conversation about forming a new economic and security relationship between Canada and the U.S. following the upcoming election on Apr. 28, according to a statement from Carney last week.
The meeting came days after Trump implemented 25 per cent auto tariffs on all vehicles coming into the U.S.

However, the U.S. plans to announce reciprocal tariffs for countries, including Canada, on Apr. 2.
In response to the changes, the Liberal government will be implementing retaliatory tariffs to protect the Canadian economy.

Online, Canadians are experiencing mixed feelings about the direction of Carney’s leadership.
“Carney seems to be hitting the right notes and beating expectations for his leadership effectiveness,” one person commented on X.
“This is fantastic. An immediate tax cut for workers, followed by a comprehensive plan to tackle affordability!,” another X user said.
However, others are worried about Canada’s relationship with the U.S.
“Why is everything about control to you guys? Why control him? Don’t you think it’s more important to work with him? It’s called negotiations. Not threats or retaliations,” one person said on X.
“Mark Carney’s declaration that Canada’s long-standing relationship with the United States is over is more than symbolic—it reflects a deeper structural unraveling. What we are witnessing is the culmination of decades of ideological entrenchment in ‘all-in capitalism,’ or what is more accurately described as neoliberal capitalism,” a Facebook user commented.
“Mark Carney , you were the lead advisor to your relative Justin Trudeau that created this breakdown of our economy and our country,” another Facebook user said.
