What to know

  • The TTC is increasing service on several bus, streetcar and subway routes to accommodate World Cup crowds and support Toronto’s transit-first strategy.
  • New and enhanced routes include additional service on the 29 Dufferin, 929 Dufferin Express, 829 Dufferin Gate Express, 504 King, 509 Harbourfront and 511 Bathurst lines.
  • The 510 Spadina streetcar will temporarily operate only between Spadina Station and Queens Quay Loop, with riders needing to transfer to the 509 Harbourfront to reach Union Station.
  • Subway service on Lines 1 and 2 will run later than usual on six World Cup match dates: June 12, June 17, June 23, July 2, July 3 and July 11.
  • Fans heading to Toronto Stadium can access the venue through the enhanced Harbourfront, Bathurst, Dufferin and King routes, depending on where they are travelling from.

As Toronto prepares to receive over 300,000 out-of-town visitors throughout the World Cup, the TTC is introducing a series of temporary changes to help keep up with added demand.

With the tournament kicking off on Thursday, the City of Toronto is continuing to push a “transit-first” approach to keep the city moving during the event, with fans being encouraged to take the TTC or GO Transit to attend matches and watch parties.

To support the increase in travel demand, the TTC has announced service increases and temporary streetcar route changes near the Toronto Stadium where matches are taking place, starting this week.

Enhanced streetcar and bus service

To help fans access the stadium, the TTC will offer additional service on the 29 Dufferin and 929 Dufferin Express bus routes, in addition to temporary 829 Dufferin Gate Express buses, which will provide non-stop service between Dufferin Station and the Dufferin Gate Loop on match days only. The buses will also operate on dedicated rapid transit lanes to ensure they can move seamlessly.

The additional bus service will be helpful to those who need to access the matches from Line 2.

Streetcar service near the stadium will also be enhanced to accommodate demand, with the 504 King, 509 Harbourfront, and 511 Bathurst streetcars operating every five minutes all day long.

The 509 Harbourfront, which runs between Union Station and Exhibition Loop, will be enhanced, while the TTC will introduce a temporary 309 Harbourfront bus route which will substitute the streetcar in the early morning period on Sundays and holidays until subway service resumes.

Streetcars will also start at a temporary stop located at Fleet Street between Fort York Boulevard and Strachan Avenue, which will replace the existing stops at Fleet Street and Fort York Boulevard on match days.

Similarly, service on the 511 and 311 Bathurst routes will also be enhanced, with more vehicles running during the event and streetcars running on rapid transit lanes to ensure reliable service.

Temporary 311 Bathurst streetcar service will be introduced overnight to accommodate road closures throughout the event.

Streetcars will run between Exhibition Loop and St. Clair Avenue West via Fleet Street and Bathurst Street. A temporary stop at Fleet Street between Fort York Boulevard and Strachan Avenue will also replace the existing Fleet Street and Fort York Boulevard stop.

510 service change

With more service along the 509 route, the TTC has adjusted service on the 510 Spadina streetcar, which will only operate between Spadina Station and Queens Queen Loop, with service being removed between Queens Quay West and Union Station.

Riders who need to get to Union Station are advised to transfer to the 509 on Queens Quay to complete the ride.

Subway service expanded

The TTC is expanding its subway service on Line 1 and Line 2 to accommodate connections to routes that connect fans to the stadium.

Typically, subway trains run until 1:30 a.m., but will be extended to later hours on game nights, including:

  • June 12
  • June 17
  • June 23
  • July 2
  • July 3
  • July 11

The TTC did not specify what time subway service will end during these days.

Taking transit to the stadium

Those coming through Line 1 are advised to take the 509 Harbourfront streetcar from Union Station and exit at the Fleet Hub stop, from where they can access the Toronto Stadium and FIFA Fan Festival.

Those coming from Line 2 have two route options. They could take the 511 Bathurst streetcar from Bathurst Station to the Fleet Hub stop, or take the 29 Dufferin, 929 Dufferin Express or 829 Dufferin Gate Express bus on match days to access the stadium.

Riders coming from both subway lines can also access the stadium through the 504 King streetcar, taking it at Line 1’s St. Andrew or King stations or from Line 2’s Dundas West and Broadview stations. They can then connect to the 511 Bathurst streetcar to access the stadium.
