Toronto Tempo star Marina Mabrey is calling out Rogers after a technician’s attempt to fix her Wi-Fi ended with the connection dropping during the final seconds of a WNBA game.
On Saturday, Mabrey turned to X for help, saying her internet “literally doesn’t work” and that she could not get anyone to answer her calls. Days later, it appears the star guard is still offline, and losing her patience.
Mabrey provided an update during a press conference on Monday, but it was not the success story fans may have hoped for.
“Bro, Rogers. Let’s talk about Rogers for a second,” Mabrey said when asked whether her internet had been fixed. “No, no, I didn’t. I did, but I didn’t.”
According to the Tempo guard, a technician visited her apartment and asked her to clear her belongings out of a closet while he worked on the connection.
“He came, told me to move all my stuff out the closet. That was crazy. I did,” she said. “He was like, ‘Yeah, it’s fixed. It had your apartment number wrong or something, something like that. And so now it works. I promise you.’”
For a brief moment, it appeared the problem had finally been solved. But about two hours after the technician left, Mabrey’s connection dropped again at perhaps the worst possible time.
“He leaves, maybe like two hours later, I’m watching the Indiana game. There’s 13.3 seconds left in fourth quarter. Cut off,” she said. “I have no idea what happened.”
When a reporter asked if her Wi-Fi was still not working, Mabrey confirmed: “No, doesn’t work.”
The situation prompted a reporter to joke that dealing with Rogers officially made the New Jersey native Canadian. Mabrey, however, was not ready to accept that particular part of life north of the border.
“I’m not. I don’t want to be part of it. I want my Wi-Fi to work,” she said.
Mabrey’s frustration also prompted several people on X to joke that unreliable internet was part of her official welcome to the city.
“The REAL Welcome to Canada experience!” one user wrote.
“Sorry this is happening but now you are officially Torontonian,” another said.
A third user called on the company to step in, writing, “@Rogers you’re making us look bad infront of Marina Mabrey! Fix this!”
The internet troubles are apparently disrupting more than Mabrey’s ability to watch basketball.
“I’m sick to death. I can’t order anything from Skims, Fashion Nova. I can order nothing,” she said. “I can barely FaceTime. I’m pissed. I’m about to tweet back at Rogers again.”
Mabrey joined the Tempo ahead of the team’s inaugural WNBA season and signed a multi-year contract with the franchise in April. She has since emerged as one of Toronto’s biggest stars and earned her first career WNBA All-Star selection.
