Health Canada is recalling six brands of the popular drink Prime Energy due to its high concentration of caffeine.
On Wednesday, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued a recall notice for the drink and its various versions, 3D Alphaland, Celsius, 5 Hour Energy, GFuel and Sting.
“The affected products are being recalled from the marketplace due to various non-compliances related to caffeine content and labelling requirements,” the CFIA said on its website.
In a report by the Canadian Press, the CFIA says the drink exceeds the acceptable caffeine limit of 180 mg per serving and therefore, must be pulled from shelves. Prime drinks contain 200 mg of caffeine per can.
Health officials say the caffeine content in Prime is equal to six cans of Coke or nearly two cans of Red Bull.
Additionally, it notes that the products did not add any English or French translation on its labels.
“High levels of caffeine may have adverse health effects for children, pregnant individuals, breastfeeding individuals, and those sensitive to caffeine,” CFIA warned.
Some of the side effects of consuming excess caffeine may include insomnia, irritability, headaches, and nervousness, according to the health agency.
Prime Energy was created by social media influencers Logan Paul and KSI in 2022. Upon its launch, the product immediately became a hit amongst their millions of young followers.
However, recently the drink has been the centre of attention after health officials raised concerns about the drink’s high caffeine levels.
The CFIA is reminding the public to check if they have these affected products at home and to contact their healthcare provider if an individual becomes sick from consuming the caffeinated beverages.
