‘A handsome Canadian I want to suck dry’: Troye Sivan’s new song has Heated Rivalry fans investigating

Sivan says “Canada Dry” was inspired by a “handsome Canadian,” and fans of Crave’s hockey romance think the song sounds suspiciously Shane Hollander-coded.

What to know

  • Troye Sivan’s new song “Canada Dry,” from his album She’s the Best, is fueling rumours of a possible crush on Heated Rivalry’s Shane Hollander. Could the show use the song in its second season?
  • The track’s steamy lyrics, like “I wanna sip your body ‘til it’s Canada Dry,” have fans drawing parallels to the romantic storyline in the hit Canadian series.
  • Sivan has dropped hints on social media, with posts suggesting the song might be inspired by a “handsome Canadian,” sending Heated Rivalry fans into detective mode.
  • Both Heated Rivalry fans and celebrities have jumped into the conversation online, speculating about the song’s true muse and celebrating the crossover between pop music and Queer TV.

Troye Sivan has written a very thirsty song about a Canadian man, and naturally, Heated Rivalry fans have opened an investigation.

The Australian pop star released his fourth studio album, She’s the Best, on Oct. 9, and one track in particular has caught Canadian listeners’ attention: “Canada Dry.”

On Oct. 11, three-time Grammy-nominated Australian artist Troye Sivan released his album, She’s the Best.

But one song has been making headlines, especially within the Heated Rivalry fanbase: “Canada Dry.”

Given the popularity of Crave’s Canadian TV series Heated Rivalry, which brings queer love and steamy, enemies-to-lovers romance between two hockey players to mainstream screens, Sivan’s new song might be telling that he’s also part of the fandom.

The title alone was enough to get people talking.

Then Sivan explained what the song was actually about.

‘A handsome Canadian I want to suck dry’

Just a day later, Sivan clarified what each song meant on an X embed — vaguely confirming “Canada Dry’s” correlation with Hudson Williams.

“Oogey gooey slinky back arch pop about a handsome Canadian I want to suck dry,” the post reads in part.

Out of the 12-song album, “Canada Dry” has been getting the most Canadian hype for its hints about Heated Rivalry.

It all started on Sept. 30, when Sivan announced the song titles on Instagram.

Celebrities, brands, and Heated Rivalry fans immediately flooded the comments, saying which song they’re most excited about, of course: “Canada Dry.”

Priyanka excitedly wrote, “CANADA DRY.”

“Thirsty for ‘Canada Dry,’” Tinder Canada added.

“Claiming track two,” Heated Rivalry Parody commented.

“CANADA MENTIONED,” another Instagram user wrote.

“As a Canadian, having a song titled ‘Canada Dry’ is f****ing iconic,” another user said.

‘Canada Dry’ is about Hudson William’: Fans react to Sivan’s new track

Following this major hint, Sivan and Heated Rivalry fans ran to the comments.

“You can admit ‘Canada Dry’ is about Hudson Williams, it’s okay,” one user wrote.

“Okay but Heated Rivalry… yes?… yes!!!” another user said.

“Girl, get in line. I was here first,” another commented.

Today, the album officially came out—and here’s everything we know about “Canada Dry.”

On Oct. 11, the album, She’s the Best, officially came out.

“I wrote a love letter to my girls, and I started to feel better, and then a fair few more to someone I haven’t met yet,” the caption reads in part.

The lyrics aren’t as subtle as some of Sivan’s previous hints.

“I wanna sip your body ‘til it’s Canada Dry,” is just one of the steamiest lyrics in “Canada Dry.”

Though some comments suggest Shawn Mendes might be the song’s subject, the Heated Rivalry fandom hopes it’s all about Hudson Williams.

Fans have even suggested Canada Dry is Shane Hollander’s favourite drink on the show, so it has to be about him.

The lyrics aren’t exactly cooling things down

The song itself has only added fuel to the theory.

“I wanna sip your body ’til it’s Canada Dry,” Sivan sings on the track.

Rolling Stone Canada described “Canada Dry” as a sultry house track, while Sivan himself has made clear that the song centres on attraction to an unidentified Canadian man.

But that last word matters: unidentified.

Sivan has not said the song is about Williams. Some listeners have floated other theories, including Canadian singer Shawn Mendes, and there is currently no evidence confirming any of them.

So the Hudson Williams connection remains exactly what it started as: a fan theory.

A particularly convenient fan theory, admittedly.

Could ‘Canada Dry’ end up on Heated Rivalry?

That’s already the next question among some fans.

Music became a major part of Heated Rivalry’s first-season phenomenon, with songs featured in the series receiving significant streaming and chart boosts. Its soundtrack later debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard 200.

The show has been renewed for season two, which is expected on Crave and HBO Max in spring 2027.

There is no indication so far that “Canada Dry” will be used in the new season.

But considering the title, the lyrics and Shane Hollander’s ginger ale habit, fans probably aren’t going to stop campaigning for it anytime soon.
