Subway and Vawks not-so-fresh collaboration

One of the lowest points this Fashion Week was having to watch the talented Sunny Fong, former winner of Project Runway Canada, send Subway-branded fashions down the runway.

The sandwich chain paid Fong an undisclosed amount (we hear it wasnt nearly enough from other designers the brand approached) to create a five-piece capsule collection to open his show. The line included a cucumber-print dress and designs emblazoned with Subways logo. It was just as horrific as it sounds.

The whole spectacle proves just how desperate Canadian designers are for any form of funding which, of course, both the Ontario and Canadian governments continue to deny them. Theres so much talent in this country, and designers shouldnt have to embarrass themselves to have a shot at making it (for a longer must-read on the subject, check out this column by Nathalie Atkinson in the Globe and Mail) .

The true party that should be embarrassed here is Subway sponsoring a show is one thing, demanding a designer begin his show with lettuce dresses is another and definitely crosses the line.
