Toronto snowstorm: What’s open and closed

40 centimetres of snow and wind speeds up to 50 kilometres per hours expected to hit Toronto Sunday.

Multiple community services and local attractions have closed for the weekend due to the heavy snowfall in the Greater Toronto Area over Saturday night and into Sunday.

As up to 50 centimetres of snow is forecasted to hit Toronto, Environment Canada has issued an Orange severe weather warning. Wind speeds will reach 50 kilometres per hour and there’s a possibility of near-zero visibility.

The city’s residents are advised to exercise caution when navigating roads and walkways and to limit travel — as it will likely be hazardous.

Services and attractions

Due to deteriorating weather conditions, all 100 Toronto Public Library branches across the GTA are closed on Sunday.

The Toronto Zoo will be closed Sunday due to the snowstorm and Monday to prepare the site following severe weather conditions. A statement on the zoo’s website reads, “The safety and well-being of our animals, staff, volunteers, and guests remain our top priority.”

All recreational activities and programs at Toronto District School Board and Toronto Catholic District School Board locations are closed Sunday. 

Jimmie Simpson on Queen Street East and Cecil Community Centre on Cecil Street are currently open as emergency, 24/7 surge shelters. Beginning at 2 p.m. today, activities and programming in the gym and table tennis room will be cancelled at Jimmie Simpson.

The University of Toronto’s Mississauga campus is closed Sunday.

TTC disruptions

Access to the University and Queen Street West entrance at Osgood Station is closed due to icy conditions. 

The 42 Cummer bus is detouring via Leslie Street, Finch Avenue East and Bayview Avenue due to the weather. 

Poor weather conditions have suspended service between the Rouge Hill GO Station Loop at Lawrence Avenue East and Starspray Loop.

What’s staying open

Still planning on going outside? Here’s what’s staying open in Toronto.

All shopping malls, including Eaton Centre, Yorkdale Shopping Centre, CF Shops at Don Mills, Square One and Scarborough Town Centre are open. Hours vary by location. 

Post offices across the GTA are open until 4 p.m., with some staying open an extra hour, until 5 p.m.
