Toronto is set to hit record-breaking temperatures today and tomorrow, but cooler weather, and possibly flurries, are in next week’s forecast.
Today’s high is set to reach a whopping 30 C, breaking the last record for this date (Apr. 13) of 27.1 C in 1977, according to Environment Canada.
Tomorrow is also slated to be a record-breaking day with a high of 27 C, beating out the previous record high on Apr. 14 of 23.9 C in 1938.
Temperatures have been in the 20s for the past few days, providing an unseasonably warm week for Torontonians.
Warning Preparedness Meteorologist for Environment Canada, Steven Flisfeder, says the burst of warm weather is due to a strong high-pressure system over southern Ontario.
“What that does is give clear sunny skies throughout the day, allowing that sun to really warm the air. At the same time, we have a warm air mass coming from the southern United States. So the combination of a warm air mass coming towards us in conjunction with clear sunny skies is really what’s giving us these really unseasonable temperatures,” he told Now Toronto on Thursday.
Saturday is set to be sunny with a mix of sun and cloud and a high of 21 C. Then on Sunday, there’s a chance of showers with a high of 21 C as well.
However, there’s unfortunate news for many. This warm bout of weather is expected to end after the weekend.
“Sunday night into Monday morning we have a cold front that’s going to make its way across the area…It is going to be a fairly sudden drop in temperatures and a pretty drastic drop in temperatures but it is going to be bringing us back to near normal temperatures,” Flisfeder said.
“This time of year we should be seeing temperatures around 10 to 12 degrees Celsius. So even though it is kind of a shock to the system, it is bringing us back towards where we should be for this time of year,” he added.
Along with cooler temperatures to come, Flisfeder said winter might not be behind us just yet.
“What people normally associate with winter is not completely over…Monday night into Tuesday morning there is a chance, so not a very strong chance, but a chance that some areas in the GTA could see some flurry activity early in the morning Tuesday especially,” he said.
“And it’s not out of the question to see snow throughout April even into May. I can’t 100 per cent guarantee we’re done with snow, but it is becoming less and less likely as time goes on.”
