Daniel Espinosa

DANIEL ESPINOSA, 21 Avenue Road, 416-323-9127, www.danielespinosa.com Rating: NNNNN

From his perch behind the Daniel Espinosa jewellery shop’s glossy white display counter, owner Christian Sarubi has a clear view of the limo arrivals and shutterbugs that swarm the Four Seasons’ lobby during the Film Festival. Seventy-five of the hotel’s top guests will be receiving an Espinosa goodie bag during their stay, and we’re guessing that by TIFF’s end, the line will have landed a new legion of tastemaking fans.

The handmade-in-Mexico collection melds simple, geometric forms with earth-toned crystals and stones, creating baubles that look high-end but sell at costume jewellery prices. The signature Infinity grouping combines free-form squiggles of silver or gold into cuffs, chokers and pendants. Deco pieces juxtapose faceted clear crystal teardrops with oxidized sterling silver chains and charms.

A cubic zirconium is usually just a dainty afterthought embellishment, but in Espinosa’s rings and bracelets, oversized aubergine orbs become classic but gutsy style statements.

Daniel Espinosa picks: Mix gold and silver bamboo-shaped bangles, $295-$365 rings come set with square, round and oval tiger’s eye stones, $245 delicate leaf-shaped tendrils drip from the lariat-style necklace, $465.

Look for: On-sale summer items featuring blue, coral and green stones marked down 30 to 70 per cent. Ask Sarubi for a peek if they’ve already been stashed away for the season.

Hours: Monday to Wednesday and Saturday 10 am to 6 pm, Thursday and Friday 10 am to 8 pm, Sunday noon to 5 pm.
