With over 3.2 million users monthly, TikTok continues to be the most popular app for users in Canada with millions participating in its many trends and challenges.

According to a new study by casino.com, there are three viral trends in particular that Canadians have grown most fond of. The online gambling site conducted a nationwide review of Canadian TikTok usage to identify popular trends and challenges. It looked at TikTok reports, accounts, news articles, publications, legacy media, and data from government resources.

In Toronto, dance challenges are a huge part of TikTok with approximately 85 per cent of content dedicated to them. In fact, some of the most popular dance challenges were created to Drake songs.

“The infamous “Started from the Bottom” dance by the Basement Gang went viral back in 2020 and had thousands of people creating dance videos for the popular song by Toronto’s rap superstar Aubrey ‘Drake’ Graham. In just five months, the account went from a few thousand to over 2 million followers,” the study said.

In addition, the study says during 2020, Drake’s “Toosie Slide” dance was a spectacle that had thousands of people recreating it on the app. Fast-forward to 2024, TikTok users are now making ‘OVO Dance’ moves and ‘crip walking’ to Kendrick Lamar’s diss track “Not Like Us”.

On top of this, other viral dance challenges include Charlie D’Amelio’s “Renegade”, Stomp 2024, Mom’s 80s Music Dance, and the Rema “Calm Down” Challenge.

Meanwhile, across the coast, tasty TikTok recipes are trending in Calgary, Alberta. For example, the Phyllo Crinkle Cake is a cooking recipe video that garnered over 20 million views within weeks. It was created by TikTok user @ramenasaidwow in December 2021. She says the recipe is a Middle Eastern dessert called muakacha.

Furthermore, another food trend that continues to be one of the top Google searched is the green goddess salad and pasta.

Going further east, British Columbia TikTok users love showcasing the beauty of their home. A common theme in B.C TikToks is driving through the province’s rich forests, majestic mountain views and stupefying wildlife.

“Most videos are about driving on the B.C. highway and inner-state roads. With its diverse landscape and wildlife, you never know what you’ll run into. Many driving videos have gone viral, from famous cars struggling on snow to users showcasing breathtaking views of their cities,” the study said.

Specifically, one of the most known videos from the province was a video of Victoria residents thanking a bus driver back in 2022. It received over seven million views in the span of two days.
