What to know

  • One Battle After Another led with nine nominations and won four awards at the 83rd Golden Globes.
  • Hamnet, directed by Chloe Zhao, won Best Picture.
  • Adolescence, The Pitt and The Studio won the night’s top TV awards.
  • Owen Cooper, who stars in Adolescence, became the youngest person to sweep at the Golden Globes, Emmys and Critics Choice Awards.

The 83rd Golden Globes kicked off Hollywood’s awards season with unexpected wins, confusing snubs and a few well-landed roasts by returning host, comedian Nikki Glaser.

Put on each January by Dick Clark Productions, the Golden Globes are known for setting the tone for the Academy Awards, which will be held later this winter, on Mar. 15.

One Battle After Another, the action thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio, led the nominations with nine, winning four awards, including Best Screenplay. Chloe Zhao won Best Picture for Hamnet, a fictional retelling about William Shakespeare’s life. Timothee Chalamet continued his sweep for ping-pong drama, Marty Supreme.

One of the night’s most heartfelt moments came from Teyana Taylor, who received the Best Supporting Actress award for One Battle After Another. After jokingly threatening her kids at home to “better be off them damn phones,” she ended her speech with a teary reminder.

“Last, but most importantly, to all my brown sisters and little brown girls watching tonight: Our softness is not a liability, our depth is not too much, our light does not need permission to shine, we belong in every room we walk into, our voices matter, and our dreams deserve space.”

Horror flick Sinners, starring Michael B. Jordan and Hailee Steinfeld, was shut out of the major awards — winning only cinematic and box office achievement and original score — at the Golden Globes, despite seven awards nominations and being a box office smash hit.

On the TV side, British psychological thriller Adolescence, came away with four awards, with its star, Owen Cooper, becoming the youngest person to win the Golden Globe, Emmy and Critics Choice Award, at 16-years-old.

Additionally, Canadian actor and comedian Seth Rogen won Best Actor for his satirical television series, The Studio.
