The 1920s picnic is coming to Spadina Museum on June 14 – a slightly scaled back version of the yearly garden party, giving guests the chance to step into the Golden Age of Jazz music for an afternoon they won’t soon forget, featuring live music, swing dancing, vintage fashion, and picnicking on the mansion’s sweeping lawn.
This retro-themed afternoon affair will feature performances from local acts Ben Harvey and His Ornamentals and Shraddha Pai & the Hot Cakes, while swing dance lessons will be provided at various times throughout the day, led by Swing Toronto.
With the warm weather descending upon Toronto, this is the perfect opportunity to get a picnic basket together, grab a blanket, and enjoy a beautiful day outdoors surrounded by the luscious gardens and unique architecture of Spadina Museum.
The annual affair is inspired by a 1928 soiree in support of Toronto’s arts scene, hosted by socialite and arts patron, Mary Austin. An impressive 98 years later, this event continues to be one of the loveliest ways to enjoy a blast from the past in the city.
Guests are encouraged to don their favourite 1920s-inspired outfits for the party — everything from pearls and sequins to flapper dresses and linen suits will fit the vibe of the event.
Whether you’re lacing up your dancing shoes and jiving on the dance floor or enjoying the atmosphere and a delicious picnic, the Spadina Garden Party captures the joy and effervescence of the Roaring Twenties.
Attendees can take part in a silent auction in the afternoon, join a costume parade hosted by the Imperial Court of Toronto, and enjoy photo opportunities with vintage-inspired displays.
