Earth Month is here and Earth Day will soon be upon us too; so in honour of our precious planet, Toronto is hosting a number of exciting events and environmental initiatives serving as a much needed reminder to take good care of our shared home.
Here’s a list of Earth Day events to check out in Toronto.
Earth Day at Gibson House Museum
Gibson House Museum is celebrating Earth Day by offering an eclectic program of educational and playful activities.
Witness the unveiling of a community mural created by Indigenous artist Mo Thunder, try your hand at crafts and textile upcycling, bring your electronic waste for recycling and safe disposal, participate in workshops, sit in on expert talks and learn about the value of environmental stewardship.
Gibson House Museum will be running its Earth Day programming from 11 a.m to 4 p.m. on April 20 at 5172 Yonge Street.
Bring your family and friends and get stuck into hands-on activities, take opportunities to learn and connect with education staff, plant trees, take a guided nature walk, and more.
This event is a great opportunity to learn about ways to reduce your environmental footprint, connect with like-minded individuals and organizations, and celebrate our planet.
Everyone is invited to join in on the celebrations taking place on April 28 at the Play Zone at Downsview Park, 70 Canuck Avenue, North York.
The event is free to the public, and no tickets are required.
WWF Climb for Nature
Reach remarkable heights for nature and wildlife!
WWF’s annual CN Tower Climb for Nature has become a yearly tradition. More than 140,000 people have climbed the tower’s 1,776 steps in honour of Earth Day, raising millions of dollars every year for WWF-Canada and the United Way of Greater Toronto.
Join this year to celebrate 32 years of enduring community spirit by registering for the April 20 and 21 climbs here as a team or individual. There is a registration fee of $25 and a minimum fundraising requirement of $125.
Those looking to test themselves can sign up for the elite climb to compete for the fastest time to the top, aiming for less than 15 minutes. Space for the elite climb is limited and a registration fee of $75 is required.
If climbing isn’t for you, but you’re eager to cheer on family and friends taking on the challenge, you can save 50 per cent on general admission by grabbing Sunrise Special tickets and be there to congratulate your loved ones on completing the challenge.
Sunrise Special tickets must be purchased on site by 8:30 a.m. on the day of the climb.
E-waste collection at Toronto Zoo
Over 50 million tonnes of e-waste is produced every year and only 15 to 20 per cent of it is recycled properly. That’s why Toronto Zoo is hosting an e-waste collection this earth day.
Bring your unwanted electronics to the zoo on Saturday, April 20, or Sunday April 21, in recognition of Earth Day, and great ape conservation.
Materials found in electronics are sourced from the same region Lowland Gorillas are from, but recycling our electronics can help to reduce the demand to mine in that region.
All donations from the event are in support of PhoneApes and will be recycled in Ontario.
Earth Day at Evergreen Brick Works
During its Earth Day festivities, visitors can immerse themselves in the nature surrounding the Brick Works, take part in workshops, contribute to a circular economy through the Mini Drop, Swap and Shop clothing market, watch educational films and so much more.
Its 2024 Earth Day theme is ‘Planet vs. Plastics’, with a focus on spreading awareness of the impact of plastics on our earth, minimizing plastic consumption and reducing the amount of plastic on the Brick Works site.
Head down to Evergreen Brickworks on April 20 between 9 a.m and 4 p.m to celebrate Earth Day!
Earth Day Candle Making Workshop
Get creative at The Sheraton Centre’s candle making workshop this Earth day!
Guests will spend two hours crafting their own sustainably made candles using beeswax from the hotel’s own honey bees, kept on site in partnership with bee keeping experts Alvéole.
Honey bees are integral to the maintenance of our ecosystem, they pollinate flowers, fruits and vegetables, and Alvéole helps to support and facilitate pollinator populations in urban spaces.
Tickets to this special event cost $65, and capacity is limited to 30 people, so get your tickets while they last.
The class will take place on Monday April 22 from 5:30 p.m to 7:30 p.m.
