An official trailer is out for the highly-anticipated Barbie feature film and a number of Canadian Ken dolls made the cut.
Barbie, is set to hit the big screen this summer on July 21, and stars Margot Robbie as the lead character. The Australian actress is widely recognized for her role as DC comic villain, Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey.
Robbie’s character is paired with her obvious doll counterpart and love interest Ken, played by London, Ontario’s Ryan Gosling, although there are a few other Canadian Ken dolls in the mix.
In the trailer, Mississauga-born Simu Liu, from Kim’s Convenience and Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is also referred to as a “Ken” and seems to be rivalring Gosling’s character.
Superbad and Arrested Development’s Michael Cera, from Brampton, Ontario, is the last Canadian actor revealed in the trailer. Cera plays Allan, based on the male doll released by toy company Mattel in 1964.
The trailer reveals little about the film’s storyline but shows more of the star-studded cast, including Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Dua Lipa, America Ferrera, Will Ferrell, Scott Evans, Kingsley Ben-Adir, and countless others.
Barbie is written and directed by Greta Gerwig, and co-written alongside her husband Noah Baumbach. The dynamic-duo have had heavyweight success individually but together have given the world films such as Frances Ha, White Noise, and Greenberg.
The first Barbie trailer was released in Dec. 2022 and did not detail much about the film’s plot but rather little girls destroying their baby dolls once they discover Mattel’s iconic blonde Barbie.
Grewig’s second trailer took the internet by storm, gaining a lot of social media reaction including excitement about the authenticity of the props used to make the dolls.
To join in on the internet fun, a Barbie selfie generator has been created for fans to make their own Barbie meme.
