A new study finds Canada is not one of the top safest countries for female travellers, but safe enough to make the final cut due to its high safety rating in transportation and walking at night.

Travel service EnjoyTravel.com and Big 7 Travel have uncovered the 20 safest countries for solo female travellers. 

Canada ranked 18 out of 20 for having one of the lowest rates of crimes towards women. The study says Canada’s safety index score and its percentage of women feeling safe walking at night are relatively high. In addition, laws on women’s safety are strong and Canada is focused on creating a more gender-equal environment, the report says. 

Here are the countries that made the top five safest countries for solo female travellers:

  1. Oman

Located in the Middle East, Oman takes the number one spot. Oman has one of the lowest female homicide rates in the world and it is also considered in the low category for overall crime, with a crime index score of under 20. The people of Oman are also famously warm and hospitable. 

  1. Taiwan

Within Asia, Taiwan is ranked as the best country for gender equality. The study says 

85 per cent of women feel comfortable walking at night, and the overall crime index score is only 16.2. Additionally, 40 per cent of the seats in the national parliament are held by women. 

  1. Slovenia

Slovenia secures a place in the top three especially since it is one of the few countries in the world that celebrate International Women’s Day with a national holiday. Almost 80 per cent of women feel safe walking at night, making the safety index score over 77 out of 100. The overall crime index score is 24.2. 

  1. Austria

Austria is known as one of the first countries in the world to grant women the right to vote in national elections. Nearly 80 per cent of Austrian women claim they feel comfortable walking at night, and the country has also made significant progress in closing the gender gap in education, as women now make up the majority of the university graduates.Its safety index score is almost 74 out of 100, and the country’s overall crime is under 30.

  1. Norway

Norway is ranked as the third most gender-equal country, in addition to being the seventh happiest country in the world. When it comes to safety, 83 per cent of women feel safe walking at night. The overall crime rate is low and the safety index score is over 66 out of 100.

  4. Republic of Ireland
  5. Poland
  6. Czech Republic
  7. Slovakia
  8. Lithuania
  9. Japan
  10. Estonia
  11. South Korea
  12. Finland
  13. Canada
  14. Latvia
  15. Greece

The study analyzed over 100 countries on the following eight criteria to find the safest countries for female solo travel: crime and safety Index, percentage of women who have experienced violence, percentage of women who feel safe walking at night, public transport and taxi safety, female homicide rates, laws on domestic abuse, attitudes towards violence against women and lastly, global gender gap index score.
