The Academy Awards are on Sunday, here’s the Canadians nominated for an Oscar

The biggest movie night of the year is set to take place this weekend and a number of noteworthy Canadians are up for the esteemed awards. 

This Sunday, the 97th Academy Awards will be televised live from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, and all eyes will be on nominees for best picture, including Canadians from British Columbia and Quebec.  

Nominated Canadians

This year, several Canadians are being recognized for their work behind the scenes to make the on-camera masterpieces. 

American comedy drama, Anora, is nominated for best picture, putting Vancouver producer Samantha Quan and her husband Sean Baker, as well as producer Alex Coco, up for an award. 

Two masterminds behind Dune: Part Two, are up for best picture Oscars, Denis Villeneuve, a writer-director from Quebec, and producer Tanya Lapointe.

Montreal nominee Patrice Vermette, along with Shane Vieau, a set decorator from Dartmouth, N.S., are also nominated for best production design for the film, which received five nominations in total. 

Two other Torontonians are nominated in the same award category, including production designer Craig Lathrop for Nosferatu, and set decorator Patricia Cuccia, for The Brutalist. 

Nosferatu is also up for best costume design as well as best makeup and hair categories, which puts Toronto’s Linda Muir, and Canadian Traci Loader up for Oscars, respectively. 

Welland, ON. native David Giammarco is nominated for best sound for his work on A Complete Unknown, the biographical musical film depicting the coming to fame story of singer songwriter Bob Dylan. 

What to know for the show  

The show will air at 7 p.m. EST on Sunday and will be televised on CTV for Canadians to watch.

American comedian Conan O’Brien will be hosting the Academy Awards for the first time ever and other hollywood names will surely draw attention to the show this year, with presenters including Selena Gomez, Oprah Winfrey,  Ana de Armas, Willem Dafoe, Lily-Rose Depp and Scarlett Johansson, to name a few. 

What to watch

Anora, The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part 2, I’m Still Here, The Substance, and Wicked, are all available on On Apple TV and Prime Video. 

Emilia Pérez, a musical crime thriller following three women in Mexico, is available on Netflix. Nickel Boys, a film based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel under the same name, is unfortunately not available on any streaming service at this time.
