A new exhibit featuring interactive works of art inspired by the beauty of Canada is now open at the Toronto Eaton Centre.

Set in a corridor of the mall, the exhibit’s accessibility allows people travelling through the mall to experience the works of art at their leisure (and during their commute!).

Canadian Chroma, presented by Cadillac Fairview, takes guests through a series of five different vibrant displays that celebrate the sights, sounds and colours of Canadian culture.

Each of the five displays is a unique celebration of Canada.

The “Colour Capsule” allows guests to step inside and use their smartphones to scan different items to activate colourful filters across parts of Canada’s landscape.

An immersive Northern Lights-themed space allows visitors to enjoy the lights of the Aurora Borealis through a display that uses sensors to mimic their movements.

The “Seasonal Colours” display celebrates the four seasons, taking participants through the different elements of Canadian summer, spring, fall, and winter.

Seven artists, representing Indigenous communities across Canada, collaborated on a special feature that celebrates Indigenous artistry. In this piece, guests can swipe through interactive screens to see different pieces inspired by the Canadian landscape, created by artists Mariah Meawasige, Kaya Joan, Aeden Corey, Mangeshig Pawis-Steckley, Emily Kewageshig, Eliot White-Hill, Kwulasultun and Casey Koyczan.

In addition, a live guest book aims to weave a tapestry that celebrates the diversity of the Canadian community. The digital book invites attendees to select a location on the globe that means something special to them, tapping it on a map to connect that location with a pin set in Canada. The result is a map covered with threads woven together in a digital tapestry that celebrates the connections between Canada and the rest of the world.

“It’s a celebration of Canadian colours, Canadian art, and allows people just to immerse themselves and interact through this journey to celebrate all that Canada has to offer, ” Andrea Nickel, senior director of experience and engagement at Cadillac Fairview, told Now Toronto at the grand opening of the exhibition.

Nickel explained that Cadillac Fairview aims to connect with and engage its visitors across various shopping centers through exhibits like Canadian Chroma.

“We wanted to offer an experience that was free [and] allowed people to walk through, interact, and just create something unique and different for our visitors to enjoy.”

Nickel said that one of her favourite parts of the exhibit is the Indigenous art feature.

“I just love amplifying the voices of our Indigenous artists across Canada, showcasing the diversity of art, and I think anytime that you’re celebrating Canada you need to tell and showcase the voices of our Indigenous culture.”

Located on level three, between Trinity Way and the Atrium, Canadian Chroma spans through a corridor by the space that formerly housed Nordstrom. People in the city can take in the exhibit for free during the Eaton Centre’s regular shopping hours.
