As Canadians prepare to watch the total solar eclipse on Monday, many places in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) are organizing viewing parties where people can witness and  learn more about the celestial event.

According to NASA, a total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the earth, completely blocking the face of the sun. In Ontario, the solar eclipse is expected to begin after 2 p.m, with the sun being fully eclipsed around 3:20 p.m.

Here are some places to view the solar eclipse:

Solar Eclipse Viewing at Downsview Airport

Northcrest Developments is hosting a community gathering to watch the solar eclipse at Downsview Airport. Over 900 kids are expected to attend from local schools as well as Mayor Olivia Chow. The event is to highlight the historical significance of eclipses for First Nations peoples and will include cultural musical performances. The event is from 2 to 4 p.m. at 34 Hanover Road.

RCIScience and EcoSpark are inviting people to Etienne Brulé Park in the west end for a viewing party. The event will explore how the eclipse impacts local wildlife behaviour through the NASA Citizen Science Soundscapes project. Organizers are reminding participants that eclipse glasses are required. The event is from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Toronto Zoo

The Toronto Zoo has set up a viewing party on Monday where participants can receive free solar eclipse glasses (while supplies last) to watch the event. It has also created a documentation event where you can become a Junior Citizen Scientist. In this role, you will help the Toronto Zoo Welfare Science team document what the animals do the day before, during, and the day after a solar eclipse. The main event will last for 10 minutes between 2:55 p.m to 3:05 p.m, but guests are encouraged to arrive in advance to find a spot.

The Toronto Public Library

The Toronto Public Library (TPL) has put together some free events ahead of its viewing party for the solar eclipse. Programs include a solar eclipse trivia, P.A day crafts, and a workshop on how to make a pinhole projector, among others. Afterwards, people can watch the solar eclipse at select TPL locations.

The CN Tower – Solar Eclipse from The Tower

The CN Tower is a recommended area to see a partial view of the solar eclipse. However, tickets are required and must be purchased in advance. Organizers are asking guests to book their reservation for 2:30 p.m. or for any time before 2 p.m. and arrive at least 20 minutes prior to get through security and get situated. Solar eclipse glasses will be provided.
