What to know

  • J. Cole has announced that his long-awaited album The Fall-Off will be released on Feb. 6, marking his seventh studio project and possibly his final one.
  • The announcement came with a reflective trailer and a new song that suggests the album is a double-disc release and centers on themes of legacy, fame, and mortality.
  • Cole described The Fall-Off as a decade-long personal challenge to create his best work and something he felt he owed to both himself and hip-hop.
  • Fans are reacting with equal parts excitement and sadness, celebrating the album’s arrival while grappling with the idea that it could be Cole’s last.

The announcement hip-hop fans have long waited for has finally arrived: J. Cole’s highly-anticipated album The Fall-Off is dropping next month.

The North Carolina rapper dropped a trailer for the project on Wednesday, where he’s washing a car at a self-service station and later sitting at a restaurant counter eating dinner.

“Everything is supposed to go away eventually,” a voice said over the clips of Cole. “You see this especially in show business with famous actors or musicians. And it’s like, ‘Oh, this guy used to be famous and then he ‘fell off.’ What happened?’”

“They always want to say, ‘That guy fell off.’ They want to look down on him for just going through the natural cycle of rising and falling,” the voiceover continued.

At the end of the clip, a preview from a song presumably on the album plays as The Fall-Off title appears, followed by its release date: Feb. 6. It will mark his seventh studio album, and possibly his last.

Hours after the announcement, Cole posted a song from the project on social media with the caption, “Disc 2 — Track 2,” suggesting that The Fall-Off would be a double-disc record.

At the beginning of the music video is a message explaining the concept behind The Fall-Off, which is now drawing speculation that this could be Cole’s final album.

“For the past 10 years, this album has been hand crafted with one intention: a personal challenge to myself to create my best work. To do on my last what I was unable to do on my first,” the Dreamville rapper wrote.

“I had no way of knowing how much time, focus and energy it would eventually take to achieve this, but despite countless challenges along the way, I knew in my heart I would one day get to the finish line. I owed it first and foremost to myself. And secondly, I owed it to hip hop.”

The song delivers Cole’s in depth life story in reverse, touching on his death, legacy, parenthood, marriage, career and his birth. The music video, directed by Ryan Doubiago, also moves in reverse through different rooms.

Fans are already amped up for the long-awaited project, some dissecting Cole’s heavy storytelling and some sad to see this possibly being his last imprint in music.

“I’m just not ready for The Fall Off yet, cause if this really his last album, I’ll be sick,” one person posted on X.

“Stuck between being hype that J Cole finally announced a date for the Fall Off and sad that it’s really going to be his last album,” another said.

“The Fall Off is going to be everything I didn’t even think to ask for,” another wrote on the platform.
Cole has been teasing the upcoming album since his 2018 fifth studio album KOD, where his closing song “1985” was listed as an intro to The Fall-Off.
