TIFF announces major award recipients, here’s a rundown of the winners

The 48th annual Toronto International Film Festival officially wrapped Sunday evening, but not without handing out a number of prestigious awards, including the People’s Choice awards, the Best Canadian Feature Film, and more. 

“We’re grateful to all the audience members, artists, industry professionals, and supporters who graced Toronto’s cinemas, red carpets, meeting spaces, and streets,” Cameron Bailey, TIFF CEO, said in a press release. “As we recognize award winners today, we thank everyone who contributed to this glorious, collective gift.”

Here’s a breakdown of who-won-what: 

Short Cuts Awards 

Three awards are handed out in this category and each recipient receives a bursary of $10,000.

Best Film winner: Electra

Best Canadian Film winner: Motherland

Share Her Journey Award winner: Shé (Snake)

Honourable Mention: Gaby’s Hills 

Neptac Award 

Winner: A Match, Director Jayant Digambar Somalkar 

Fipresci Prize 

Winner: Seagrass, Director Meredith Hama-Brown 

Amplify Voices Award, presented by Canada Goose 

Three awards are presented to under-presented filmmakers across Canada and each winner receives a cash prize of $10,000. 

Best BIPOC Canadian Feature winner: Kanaval, Director Henri Pardo

Best BIPOC Canadian First Feature Award winner: Tautuktavuk (What We See)

Trailblazer Award winner: Damon D’Oliveira, producer

Best Canadian Feature Film Award 

Winner: Solo, Director Sophie Dupuis

Honourable Mention: Kanaval, Director Henri Pardo

Changemaker Award 

An award presented to a festival film which explores issues related to social change and youth empowerment, faced by young people. The winner receives $10,000. 

Winner: We Grown Now, Director Minhal Baig

Platform Award 

An award of $20,000, given to the best film in the programme. 

Winner: Dear Jassi, Director Tarsem Singh Dhandwar

People’s Choice Awards 

Selected by the audience, all films in TIFF’s Official Selection are eligible for these awards. 

People’s Choice Midnight Madness Award winner: Dicks: The Musical, Director Larry Charles 

People’s Choice Documentary Award winner: Mr. Dressup: The Magic of Make-Believe, Director Robert McCallum 

People’s Choice Award winner: American Fiction, Director Cord Jefferson

Special Tribute Award 

Winner: Andy Lau, The Movie Emperor

TIFF Emerging Talent Award

Winner: Carolina Markowicz, Toll 

TIFF Variety Artisan Award

Winner:  Łukasz Żal, The Zone of Interest
