The Toronto Caribbean Carnival’s King and Queen Showcase was cancelled mid-way due to a thunderstorm that rolled into the city Thursday night.
The event was held at Lamport Stadium, where over 50 participants were set to perform in hand-crafted costumes inspired by a range of themes set to be featured at the Grand Parade at Exhibition Place on Saturday.

But the showcase was cut-short amidst intermittent thunder and lightning. A number of the performers had metal in their costumes which ultimately led to the postponement, according to reports.

The acts who were unable to perform on Thursday will do so on Saturday at the parade, where the King and Queen will also be crowned.
Maggie Rogers’s concert at Budweiser Stage was also temporarily suspended due to the storm, but ultimately resumed after the showers passed.
This year marks the 56th anniversary of the Grand Parade, a long-standing tradition of Caribbean culture founded in celebration of emancipation from slavery. This year it will take place on what is officially recognized as Emancipation Day weekend.
