August 26 marks International Dog Day and in recognition of the day the Toronto Humane Society is putting a spotlight on adorable pups in desperate need of a home.

The non-profit animal shelter is sharing the story of seven dogs that have been in its care for an extended period of time.

“International Dog Day is a celebration of the profound bond between humans and dogs, and what better way to commemorate this day than by helping our long stay dogs find their forever homes,” Division Manager of Shelter Programs at Toronto Humane Society Melissa Shupak said in a news release.

Here are seven dogs in need of a home:

Bailey:

The two-year-old American Bulldog is a big-hearted, playful boy in need of an energetic forever home. He’s great with other dogs and is working on building confidence with meeting new people and adjusting to new environments, the Humane Society said. Bailey would thrive in a home with a patient and active family.

The two-year-old mixed breed is a loyal and loving boy who’s on a journey of trust-building. “Patient interaction and gentle walks are key to unveiling his true personality, revealing his impressive leash skills and joy for exploration,” the Humane Society said.

Goldie:

Goldie is a five-year-old shepherd mix and is an ideal partner for outdoor adventures. The energetic canine loves to be active by swimming and chasing balls, but also enjoys lounging on the porch in the sun and being a cozy companion. She would do best in a home located in a quieter neighbourhood, with a fenced backyard. “Over time, Goldie has transformed from a wary dog to a trusting friend, as she is learning to embrace new faces and calm down around other dogs,” according to the Humane Society.

Hades:

Described as the friendliest dog around, Hades is a charismatic two-year-old, mixed breed male who loves to be the centre of attention. He enjoys agility training, brain games and cuddles. Hades would thrive in a home that can provide couch cuddles, continue his training, and possibly has another medium-sized dog in it.

Hazel:

Hazel is a sweet and loving five-year-old, mixed breed female looking for a forever home outside of Ontario. “Due to breed specific legislation in the province of Ontario, Hazel will need a family from outside Ontario to adopt her. #EndTheBan #EndBSL,” the Humane Society said.

She thrives outdoors and enjoys walks, camping and hiking. “She’s eager to be a devoted friend and, with patient training and support, she’s ready to blossom into a loyal and affectionate companion,” the Humane Society said.
