What to watch on Crave in March 2022

Phoenix Rising

Last year, Evan Rachel Woods opened up via Instagram about being groomed and horrifically abused as a teen by Brian Werner, aka Marilyn Manson. “I am done living in fear of retaliation, slander, or blackmail,” Woods wrote at the time. She named a predator whose torture she had described publicly for years, even before the #MeToo movement took hold. And in the years since, she became an activist, appearing before congress to speak about her experience with domestic violence and torture. HBO’s two-part documentary follows Woods as she shares traumatic memories and her efforts alongside other survivors to make sure victims are heard. March 15

Star Trek: Picard, season 2

We have to be honest: while it was a pleasure to see Patrick Stewart return to the role that made him a beloved cult icon, the first season of this Next Generation follow-up was a little on the dull side. But people watched it, and it ended with the ailing Jean-Luc rejuvenated and ready to start boldly going again – so here’s season 2, with our hero and his new crew (Santiago Cabrera, Jeri Ryan, Michelle Hurd, Alison Pill, Evan Evagora) trying to save their reality from an all-powerful, pissed-off Q (John DeLancie). Whatever happens, we have been assured Number One – the pit bull, not Will Riker – will be back. New episodes Thursdays from March 3

Our Flag Means Death

Pirates! Scourges of the sea, demons of the deep, banes of the beach. But some of them were quite nice! This HBO Max series stars Rhys Darby as Stede Bonnet, an aristocrat who left his family behind in England to sail as “The Gentleman Pirate” – and yes, that really happened. (It is unlikely that his crew was as progressive as they’re depicted here, but that of course is where comedy comes from.) Darby’s longtime pal Taika Waititi – who worked with him Flight Of The Conchords and the original What We Do In The Shadows – directed the pilot, serves as an executive producer and turns up as Blackbeard, because of course he does. New episodes Thursdays from March 3

Beans

Winner of both best picture and best first feature at last year’s Canadian Screen Awards – and currently a finalist for the Toronto Film Critics Association’s $100,000 Rogers best Canadian film prize – Tracey Deer’s devastating autobiographical drama restages the Oka Crisis of 1990 through the eyes of a 12-year-old Mohawk girl (Kiawentiio, of Anne With An E and Rutherford Falls) forced to confront racism head-on when her entire world collapses into chaos. Sadly, it’s only become more relevant since it premiered at TIFF 2020. March 18

Dune

If you haven’t already caught up to Canadian director Denis Villeneuve’s grim, operatic, overlong but nevertheless impressive adaptation of the Frank Herbert novel, Crave is making it available for streaming. (It’s not exactly the IMAX experience Villeneuve advocated for, but still.) Now you can see what all the fuss is about before the March 27 Academy Award ceremony, where Dune is competing in 10 categories including Best Picture. And you can lend your voices to those crying foul over Villeneuve’s snub in the directing category. If there was one thing to appreciate when it came to Dune, it’s the way Villeneuve wrangled the novel into a satisfying ode to Lawrence of Arabia. March 18

Transplant

Created by Joseph Kay, this CTV drama centres on Hamza Haq as Bashir Hamed, a Syrian refugee caring for his kid sister (Sirena Gulamgaus) while starting over as an ER resident in Toronto among a handful of other attractive young doctors (Laurence Lebeouf, Ayisha Issa, Jim Watson) with their own personal lives and issues, watched over by a tolerant head nurse (Torri Higginson) and a crotchety department chief (John Hannah). It’s fast-paced and extremely watchable, and the patient(s)-of-the-week conceit allows for a revolving door of gifted guest stars. Season 1 is currently available in its entirety; season 2 arrives March 25.

Julia

No sooner has Julie Cohen and Betsy West’s documentary about Julia Child’s life and work arrived on demand than HBO Max drops a dramatic series about the radical polymath who brought French cooking to America and became a television star by doing so. Happy Valley’s Sarah Lancashire stars as Julia, with David Hyde Pierce as her doting husband Paul. We’re just hoping the show finds room for Americans-style flashbacks to the couple’s time in the OSS. March 31
