Adele is a 19-year-old from London who’d already performed between Björk and Paul McCartney on the BBC months before her debut album and is currently being tagged “the next Amy Winehouse.” It’s not a misplaced comparison – the two Brits went to the same school and mine the same era of American blues, jazz and soul, and Mark Ronson likes both of them.
However, Adele does have her own identity and sound. She’s often at her best alone with an acoustic guitar instead of ornamented with retro R&B references. It’s easy to want to dislike something that the UK press, Perez Hilton and Kanye West are telling you to like, but Adele shows some real talent. Initial reports suggest she’s a lot more stable than Winehouse, so she may be better equiped to deal with her imminent success.
