Montreal-based techno producer Akufen uses techniques lifted from serious academic music, but creates mind-expanding, funky-as-hell house tracks that have been getting a huge amount of attention overseas lately. His newest album, My Way, continues with his trademark technique of using micro-samples of transistor radio channel-surfing to create surprisingly swinging and melodic songs. Many of his ideas are tempered with his quirky sense of humour — not a detached irony or goofy clowning, but something more subtle. Essential for anyone interested in the future of electronic music.
